Runaway combines two of my favorite tropes second chances and coming out.
Nate is a doctor who was out while attending uni and his training as a physician in Sydney, but when he returned to his hometown his worries about how his sexuality would affect his medical practice caused him to go back in the closet, except to his sister.
Damian is a business owner in the small town where he and Nate grew up. They were boyfriends, albeit somewhat secretly, as teenagers and parted ways when Nate moved away. Now that Nate is back, Damian realizes that Nate is not out. Damian is out and not willing to be anyone’s dirty little secret.
There are actually two runaways in this story. Nate is running away from who he actually is by being in the closet. The main runaway, though, is Nate’s nephew Jackson. Jackson is a gay teenager who has not yet come out but is the victim of bullying. Couple that with not wanting to continue his current course of education and the pressure is overwhelming. Jackson runs away to Sydney, frightening his mother, who asks her brother Nate to help her find him.
This is a sweet story of Nate and Damian reconnecting while Nate discovers there are worse things than just being himself, out and proud. It’s also the story of Nate admitting to Jackson that he hasn’t been a good example to Jackson. At the end it looks like everyone will be going home to start over and not hide who they are and who they love. Great story.

Years after leaving, Nate returned to his hometown, a doctor. In Sydney, Nate didn’t hide his sexuality, nor did he flaunt it either; it was no one’s business other than his own. But in his small hometown, everyone knew everything about everyone, and that bothered Nate.
After events that happened in his formative years, Nate is fighting people’s perception of a gay man examining them and their children and its effect on his career. It’s a case of the actions of a few tainting the actions of the many.
Damien is a man who lives by the term ‘if it’s meant to be, it will happen’. He’s an altogether good guy with a balanced, outlook on life. He is also Nate’s childhood love. Nate still harbours feelings for him along with a host of regrets. But, Nate isn’t sure he can revisit what they had as teenagers. The painful memories of their breakup and Nate’s career outlook, make their budding adult friendship awkward; especially so, since Damien is out, proud, and won’t be anyone’s dirty little secret.
When Nate’s nephew Jackson runs away, it forces Nate to look at his life from a different perspective. This is in the blur, so no spoiler here.
I love this author’s easy reading style of writing. It has an intimate, naturally flowing, personal vibe that I connect with. The focus stays true to the story and doesn’t get sidetracked. The cast is small and contains the traditional meddling sister, skilled at manipulating situations to her preferred outcome. But what I liked the most was the emotions and re-evaluations that Nate experiences. He knows what he wants, but is scared to go after it. He has to process.
Yes, Jackson runs away, but Nate is the true runaway of this story. He ran away to leave some things he couldn’t handle, behind, and to follow his chosen career. His return to his hometown allows him to take that part of his life journey which may enable him to go after that something special that could put love into his world.
Runaway is a sweet story of life that is perfect for reading on that spring day in the garden. It brings home the fact that an offhanded comment can affect a person’s whole life, and that enlightenment can come in more than one form.
Runaway is a great novella about second chances and the hardship of adolescence written with lots of heart and compassion. This book is part of the World of Love series which shows love at different parts of the world. I love reading Nic Starr and her wonderful books set in her gorgeous home, Australia. I love stories set in a place I haven’t been before but dream about going and Sydney and its area is exactly like that.
The writing is solid as always and the plot-line is a good combination of the re-connection of two guys who used to be best friends with benefits and the search of a runaway teenage boy. The different elements are woven together and we get to know our characters bit by bit with all the details coming together nicely as the story comes full circle by the end. Even if we get a HFN ending we understand that Nate and his nephew, Jackson, help each other to move on and both change their lives for the better.
Our reconnecting MCs, Damien and Nate, still have great chemistry and their attraction is palpable. Their renewed connection is real and well-paced with a true promise for a wonderful future together. The glimpses we get to their past tells a nice and real first-love story. With the flashbacks we can put together their shared history and also understand what they mean to each other and what conflicts they had in the past. However, I would have loved to read more details about them together as teens. I loved the prologue and understood its significance later, but missed some more from the story. I understand the limits of a novella and we get all the feels, don’t get me wrong, but I just wanted more… which only shows how much I like these guys. Have fun and enjoy this story!
